Background:
At first, Alief Gustakhiyat was not close enough to the virtual world, especially social media, because everyday he works as a truck driver who spends a lot of time on the highway. The cellphone he has is only perfunctory. That is enough for Alief as a capital for outside activities. However, over time, Alief had moved to work as a forklift operator at a company in the East Jakarta area. When Alief made enough money from his job, he finally bought an android phone in 2018. With that cellphone Alief recorded some videos of his guitar playing. From the encouragement of several friends around him, Alief finally uploaded his action to cyberspace.
Starting from a Facebook account created in 2018, Alief uploaded many of his performances playing guitar with songs of his own choice. Initially, he just recorded using his cellphone at his rented fad after work. The song played at that time was the illustration music for the Super Mario Bros games. However, it turned out that the public's response to seeing him playing the guitar was quite good and earned him a lot of praise. Departing from that, his enthusiasm was even more excited to continue recording videos of his guitar playing and sharing them through his Youtube channel that he created in the same year. Long before working in the world of Youtube, around 2010, Alief had joined a Qasidah band and often played Islamic religious songs.
Recognition:
Many musicians, both from Indonesia and abroad, recognized Alief's expertise in playing guitar. In an interview with Baim Wong, Dewa Budjana acknowledged the greatness of Alief who has mastered various guitar playing techniques. Budjana saw that his guitar playing was very unique and difficult because he combined elements of harmonic tones with fingerstyle. However, he himself also did a dichotomy between creator and player. That is why Budjana, in uploading videos, mostly displays games from his own creations. In the future, Budjana really hopes that one day Alief will be able to perform, not only a cover of a song, but also focus on creating his own work that can be presented in a big show, face to face with the audience.
A similar statement was made by senior musician Addie MS via his Twitter account, saying that he was late in knowing the Indonesian music phenomenon because he focused more on symphonic music. Nevertheless, Addie expressed her admiration for Alief.
World musician Brian May, guitarist for the legendary band Queen, also appreciated Alief's ability to play his guitar. May uploaded the Alip_Ba_Ta video via her personal Facebook account. He was impressed by the guitar playing that covered Bohemian Rhapsody, one of Queen's iconic songs. May also mentioned that in the video upload, Alief was a forklift operator, which is Alief's job. It seems May did not think that Alief's job had nothing to do with his skill in playing fingerstyle guitar. Queen's official Facebook account is known to have uploaded a video of Alief playing the song Love of My Life.
Praise for Alief also came from fingerstyle guitarist from Russia, Igor Presnyakov alias Uncle Igor and Fun Two. Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates also uploaded Alief's action in his Instagram stories.
